KazTrans Gas Pipeline

Name: KazTrans Gas Pipeline
Owner: Government of Kazakhstan
Location: Inder, Kazakhstan
Project Type: Recoating of 30+ year old
Products: CAP (Cathodic Anticorrosion Polyurea) and Extra Tough
Date: June 2007 (on-going since May 2008)

The pipeline, installed in the 1980s, was initially coated with coal tar epoxy. Due to subsequent corrosion accelerated by alkaline and salt conditions in the soil, the pipeline and substations required refurbishing. Epoxies were not an option due to temperature and weather extremes. Also, the pipeline was in active use during application with 1500-psi gas flowing through the line.

Prior to coating, the coal tar epoxy was removed via sandblasting. CAP was chosen as a base coat because of its certification as having passed cathodic and anti-corrosion testing. This primer coat was applied at 15 mils with a cure time of under 5 minutes. Extra Tough (ET) top coat was applied at 60 mils with a cure time of 15 seconds. ET was chosen because of its extreme durability, elongation (anti-brittleness), and chemical resistance. Most importantly for this application, Extra Tough was capable of being applied in temperatures ranging from 0 to 140°F.
