Date: September 2008
The new Fine Arts Center was constructed from an old dismantled wooden barn. The upper outdoor deck area was above office space and viewing areas and there was a concern about rain water leaking through. The polyurea technology was chosen as a water proofing membrane due to the speed of application, seamless installation and bonding to the various drain penetrations and wall areas. Large stone tiles were used as the floor area over the membrane.
Following preparation of the concrete deck, an epoxy/sand filler was used to help slope to drains and fill weak spots in overlay slab. TNEMEC 401 series epoxy primer system was applied to give a good seal for bonding of the liner system to the deck. This was followed by application of a minimum average 50 mils (1.3 mm) of the Extra Tough aromatic polyurea spray system, with broadcast of color quartz aggregate. This allowed for bonding of the mortar system for the rock tile slab flooring.
Extra Tough was applied using a GUSMER® H-3500 unit fitted with GUSMER GX-7-400 and GX-7A spray guns. The guns were configured to provide 1 gal/min (3.8 l/min) and 2 gal/min (7.6 l/min) outputs respectively to control output and provide the desired spray pattern at 2000 psi (138 bar) spray processing pressure.
The deck area is now waterproofed and will provide protection to the floor area below.
